Peyote Bracelet on HowToTV

Check out this week's featured video at HowToTVonline.com! I show Beads, Baubles & Jewels host Katina Forté how to make a flat stitch peyote bracelet with a fun button embellishment. If you've never tried peyote stitch before, this is a nice starter project. You work with 6/0 seed beads, so they're larger than the super tiny versions and you can see what you're doing as you stitch.

The tricky part about getting started on this type of stitch is that it's hard to tell which beads are "up" and which are "down" in the first two rows. Step by Step Beads editor Leslie Rogalski came up with a simple technique: Place the end of a hard beading needle inside a BeadStopper, pass the needle through the "up" beads and place the other end of the needle in another BeadStopper. This makes it so much easier to get started and keep your tension even as you work.

Flashback Friday

Today, for your viewing pleasure, may I present: Beaded Fruit.

At the CHA Show last January, I was stopped dead in my tracks by this display of retro fabulous beaded produce. I didn't know that you could still buy kits to make this! Turns out, they've been available for 30+ years and they're still kickin'.

For those of you who aren't familiar with this type of thing, beaded fruit starts with a blank polystyrene form. You place sequins and beads onto pins and press them into the fruit to cover the surface. The kit comes with complete instructions.

Curious how long it would take to make, say, a pear? Strictly in the name of research, I sat down to find out. One and a half hours later (roughly the time it takes to bead while watching a movie), I was rewarded with the fruit of my labor:

Ta-da! The pear-fect complement to my vintage Fiesta collection!

Treasure Bracelet Pattern

I miss the ocean! This is one of my favorite looks for summer, even when you can't get to the beach. Shells and ceramic beads are mixed with crystals and metallic chain for a fun, textured feel. It's easy to turn this into a necklace, too. Just add a clasp to one end of an extra piece of chain and connect it to the ends of the bracelet.

Complete instructions available at Michaels.com. CRYSTALLIZED™ - Swarovski Elements; Bead Gallery beads; Beadalon wire, chain & findings.

(I don't know why this is underlined! I can't fix it!)

Take the Craft Night Pledge

Craft Night

I've taken the Craft Night Pledge - have you? The Craft & Hobby Association (CHA) is encouraging people to spend one night a week crafting with friends and family, and I know a lot of you guys are already doing it! "Form"alize your commitment by downloading the pledge and placing it in a prominent place in your home.

You already know the benefits of crafting - sense of accomplishment, memory keeping, relaxation, spending time with friends and family, saving money on gifts, artistic expression (need I go on?) and here's your chance to share them with others. Visit the link above to download your Craft Night Pledge form and to get instructions for uploading your craft night pix to Flickr. If you're participating, leave a comment and let me know how it's going!

Here are a few ideas for a beady craft night: wire-wrapped candleholder, memory wire ornaments, cell phone charms, stretchy bracelets & earrings.

New Designs for Michaels

Here's a new ad using designs that I created for Michaels. It's on the inside front cover of the new Beadwork issue and includes a coupon for 20% off your jewelry making purchase.

I had a lot of fun shopping for the beads and putting these designs together. You can see why pearls have been on my mind! And shells of all kinds, really. I decided on a gray, aqua and purple color palette and then started building the designs from there. That way, they have a cohesive look even though the designs are all very different.

Did you know that some of my most popular books are available in Michaels stores?

Dyeing Freshwater Pearls

Did you know that you can dye your own freshwater pearls? It had honestly never occurred to me before this morning. I opened the Fire Mountain Gems jewelry designer's newsletter and there was a link to instructions on how to dye pearls using fabric dye.

What great information! This could open up a whole realm of possibilities, especially when it comes to creating designs that are uniquely yours.

Bright pinks and greens would put a fun, springtime twist on the classic look of knotted pearls this season. For tips, check out my pearl knotting tutorial from Beads, Baubles & Jewels.

Perfect Pinwheels Necklace

My Perfect Pinwheels Necklace from the April/May issue of Beadwork magazine is the free, featured download on BeadingDaily.com today!

This artsy, asymmetrical design uses ceramic pinwheel links from my pal Jennifer at Jangles to create transitions between the multiple strand focal section and the ladder stitch straps on the ends. The pinwheels also punctuate the necklace with color and provide dramatic places for the eye to rest while taking in the entire design.

This project is the online companion to "Katie's Beading Secrets," my department in every issue where I showcase cool beading products with clever tips on how to use common materials in unconventional ways. This month's feature is links.

Judging a Book by its Cover(s)

A special edition of Bead & Wire Jewelry Exposed is now available through the Crafter's Choice book club. It's the same book with a different cover, which features Fernando Dasilva's beautiful Twisted Garden necklace. Isn't it interesting to see this "twist" on the original version? The colors and layout create a softer, more romantic look.

I like the original version because it shows the crinkled beading wire and exposing the underlying materials is the focus of the book. It also has an edgier look that stands out when compared to other jewelry making books. But, I can see how the pink version will appeal to a different set of jewelry makers and I really like it either way. So, go ahead, judge our book by its covers!

Free Beading Project from Exposed: Golden Glow Earrings

Here's the last free jewelry project to whet your appetite for Bead & Wire Jewelry Exposed co-written by Margot Potter, Fernando DaSilva and yours truly (F+W Pubs 2009). From wire designs that defy gravity to innovative uses of everyday findings, there is inspiration for the beginning beader and the experienced jewelry designer on every page.

In last week's post, I invited readers to leave a comment to be entered in a drawing to win my Connections Necklace from Exposed. The name that was randomly selected from the hat is Debbie B. Congrats! (Debbie, please email me your mailing address at Katie@KatieHacker.com.) This week, you're all invited to leave a comment to be entered in a drawing to win a kit to make a piece of jewelry from Exposed.

GOLDEN GLOW EARRINGS

Fernando's earring design was inspired by his mother, who never goes out in public without at least a pair of earrings. He envisioned a pair of slim and elegant drop earrings suitable for any occasion. Incorporating square Crystallized™ buttons with teardrop crystals and satin gold Bead Bumpers™ results in an edgy but very wearable design.

Materials
2 Swarovski 14mm light Colorado topaz square crystal buttons
2 Swarovski 24 x 12mm Terrenum long tear drop crystal pendants
14 gold plated 4mm light weight jump rings
2 gold plated modern ear post
4 gold plated pinch bails
50 satin gold cube bead bumpers – 1.7mm
16” of gold plated German style wire

Tools
Beadstrom™ chain nose pliers
Beadstrom™ round nose pliers
Beadstrom™ flush cutter
Mighty crimp tool

Instructions
1.Using the outside jaw of the mighty crimper tool attach 1 pinch bail to each hole of one square button; be gentle using the crimper tool otherwise the edges of the button will chip and you don’t want that to happen;
2. Attach one pinch bail to the long tear drop; use the same techniques applied on step 1;
3. Using chain nose pliers wrap one of the tips of German style wire to the tear drop assembled on step 2; place the tip of wire into the edge of pinch bail and turning around its neck twice; trim excess wire and tuck the tip under the wrapped portion;
4. String 25 gold satin bead bumpers onto the German style wire; wrap around the tear drop on vertical position and finish the same way was done in step 3; make sure the wire was wrapped tight around the crystal tear drop and then trim excess wire;
5. Open 1 4mm round jump rings and slide through tear drop’s pinch bail ring and then close gently; attach a second jump ring following same directions;
6. Open a 6mmm round jump ring and string 4 bead bumpers into it;
7. Repeat step 5 to attach 2 others 4mm round jump rings to square button pinch bail and then attach it to 6mm jump ring;
8. Attach the portion finished on step 7 to 2 round jump rings and then attached to a single jump ring previously attached to modern ear post.
9. Repeat all steps to make a matching earring.

All crystals are from Create Your Style with CRYSTALLIZED™ - Swarovski Elements; chain and findings are from Beadalon.

See the book for step by step pictures of the project!

Free Sunburst Necklace Pattern

Here's a free necklace pattern that will take you from easy stringing to painless stitching! I designed this Sunburst Necklace for Beadalon's newest ad campaign. If you follow the Beadmaster link, you'll be treated to one of the newest innovations in beading instruction: fully animated instructions!

I've been using this new technology to teach my classes and I can tell you that students absolutely love it. You can really see the thread pathways and how everything goes together. (The Beadmaster version of my Sunburst Necklace is a little appetizer to show you how the animation works. The full, copyright-free Beadmaster collection is available on DVD or in a kit with CD-rom.)

The Sunburst Necklace/Beadalon ad is just starting to hit magazines in the UK, so I've been getting a lot of sourcing questions. I bought the purple shell bead frame from Black Market Minerals, but these types of frames are widely available at bead shows, craft stores and bead shops right now. The seed beads and cubes are Toho brand, in mixed colors.
