My free, web-exclusive necklace design for the latest issue of Beadwork magazine combines herringbone tubes with trendy charm accents. Plus, it has hidden meanings for those in the know: purple tones for creativity, a hummingbird charm for moving forward, and an eye charm for insight.I am always intimidated when learning new beading stitches but I ended up having a lot of fun with these herringbone tubes. The pattern is a little tricky at first, but then it just spirals around and around on its own. I like using the tubes because they work up quicker than an entire rope but you still get the handmade, beady look.
This is a companion project to Katie's Beading Secrets in the August/September 2009 issue of Beadwork. In every issue, I showcase cool beading products with clever tips on how to use common materials in unconventional ways. This month's feature is charm holders.

I have learned that the best way to learn a new stitch is to realize that it won't be perfect the first time. Once I learned to focus on learning the stitch and not worry about what it looked like, the learning process was easy. I also mastered the stitches my faster. Before I never got past the first couple of rows because it was never perfect - I kept starting and stopping and doing the first few rows over and over. I also learned that you often need to get past the first few rows to see what you are actually doing. Thanks for sharing.
I know what you mean - it's so true that you have to get past the first few rows! And, it's always easier to learn new things when you're open to making mistakes.
Can't wait to try it! Thanks Katie for sharing!!

I absolutely love this.
Did you see the horsehair entry in the July ABS contest?
I think they're copying you.
This looks like it may become a trend.
