The Price of Beading

My sister's friend got married in Las Vegas last week (congrats, T!) and found the perfect necklace made of large, faceted glass beads to go with her dress. The only not-perfect part was the price tag: $500. They contemplated a call to the emergency beading hotline (me) but then she found a different necklace for a lot less money. It got me thinking.

Like a lot of people, it thrills me that I can make stylish jewelry for less than what it would cost to buy in a store. One of my favorite columns in Simply Beads is the Take 10 challenge where a designer has to make something cool for less than $10. I love the way an inexpensive piece of jewelry can add the perfect finishing touch to an outfit.

Of course, I like to use sterling components, crystals, or one-of-a-kind handmade beads, too. Handmade beads aren't cheap, but they are little pieces of art that make my designs unique.

My beading motto is becoming: scrimp when you have to, splurge when you can. In the end, you can't put a price on creative therapy!
